It isn’t needed to hurt your dog in any way to train them to obey simple commands. Oftentimes the acceptable manner of smacking a dog was to use a loosely rolled up newspaper. If you’ve ever done this, no doubt you’ve experienced the aftermaths of getting home to a entirely chopped up newsprint.

Having a dog jump up at you can be a scaring experience if it’s not your dog, especially if the dog is big or aggressive. Over time attempt using just the simple but firm ‘no jump ’ command and when he responds to this every time, you will be able to put the tin can rattle aside.

While you’re training your dog in this manner, remember to keep the tin can rattle at the places that he commonly likes to jump up at you. For example keep one at your main entry door.

The second no jump technique is as well really simple, but it demands from you to have some physical contact with your dog. I learned this particular technique when I was taking one of my dogs to dog obedience school.

When your dog jumps on you, grab one of his front paws and give him a firm squeeze, as you say “no jump”. The squeeze needs to be firm so your dog understands what you want from him, but it doesn’t require to be that strong that you’d hurt your dog. Your dog might even cry a bit as you do this, but it’s very effective, in no time. The proper way to use the “knee” technique is by bending your knee in front of your dog, when he attempts to jump at you. This technique works better for larger size dogs, as the knee will be at their chest level when you bend it, and this feel uncomfortable for them. As you do this, say “no jump”. A few trials of this and your dog will learn not to ever jump on people.

In addition keep in mind that when your dog jumps at you it’s for attention. To a dog we’re all giants, even the large breeds can’t maintain eye contact with their owner unless they jump up on them. Your dog loves to see you! This is why he jumps up at you. He’s usually greeting you.
